The Ticker

A Hospital Stay

The warmth issuing from the heater made the room stiffling.

He hated how the dry air chapped his skin - causing the fissures across his hands to flake.

The tiny purple and red spots -

the telltale signs of Petechiae, ran across his arms where where scar tissue remained from previous injections.

As he sate brooding on the edge of his hospital bed, he felt the fatigue - that had visibly left its mark on his wrinkled face.

Looking down at the information printed on his hospital wristband, he suddenly felt that his identity had been stripped to nothing more than a name and a date of birth.

Fueled by frustration and anger, he needed to find a way to reassert some control over his present situation.

Eyeing the thermostat on the wall, he shoved his feet into a pair of worn slippers and shifted slowly towards it.

The dull ache in his muscles as he stretched his arms to reach for the thermostat's dial was yet another cruel reminder of his declining years.

Upon turning the dial, he heard it make a faint clicking sound.

However, as he let his hands drop, he realized he was mistaken -

and that he noise actually originated from somewhere inside his chest.
