I am an alien. I’ve been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, which explain some but not all aspects of my life. Maybe I really am from a different planet. Until that planet is discovered, I have to learn to survive here on Earth.

Driving A Car Without a Steering Wheel
(Originally published on my blog, at angelnickirocks.Blogspot.com) Have you ever known a person with ADHD or autism who really had a hard time focusing on things they were supposed to pay attention to, or getting motivated to do things they needed to do? Yet when they spent time doing something they were interested in, you could not peel them away from it? It just seems to draw them in and not let them go? For a lot of kids, that might be video games or playing with a favorite toy. For my friend Adwin, it’s painting… he’s been known to leave a room to use the bathroom, and then secretly sneak off to paint instead of coming back! For me, it’s usually painting rocks.

I Live In a Bubble
My name is Angel and this is my autistic confession. In life one of my biggest struggles is connecting with other people. I often feel like I’m in a bubble. A floating bubble, like the bubbles you blow with a wand in the summer. People can see me and talk to me, but just for a minute, as I float by, but I‘m never really there in the same place as them.

Why Indiana House Bill 1134 Will Not Work
Indiana House Bill 1134 is one of several bills that, if it becomes a law, will require teachers to post lesson plans for the entire school year, for every subject, by the end of June. This bill and similar ones also give parents the option of refusing to allow their children to participate in certain lessons. Proponents say that these laws would protect their rights to control what their children learn or are exposed to in school.

Long ago, before I ever met a transgender person, I thought that being transgender was weird and a little gross. I thought that, because that was what I had been taught by my parents and others, and also because I didn’t really understand what transgender was.

I Hate the Holland Poem
My name is Angel, and this is my autistic confession. I hate the Holland poem. Do you know the one I’m talking about? Well, when I first started working with children with special needs, there was a poem that was often referenced by parents. You've probably heard it, as it can still be found on the websites of many organizations that are related to disabilities. In the poem, the unnamed person plans to go on a vacation to Italy, and they are looking forward to all of the great things they will get to do. Inexplicably the plane goes to Holland instead. The person is then stuck there, on a vacation that is not the one they wanted.

I’m Not High Functioning
My name is Angel and this is my autistic confession. I am not “high functioning.” Ever since I was first diagnosed with autism, I’ve been told by random people that I am high functioning. After five minutes of knowing me, they are ready to declare, “You must be so high functioning!”
