Understanding the Mind

The Power and Potential of the Mind

By Francis OchiwuPublished about a month ago 3 min read

The mind, one of the most complicated and intriguing aspects of human existence, is the center of our experiences and actions. It encompasses our thoughts, emotions, memories, desires, and consciousness. The limitless potential of the mind is truly fascinating. As we can see all around us, the evolution of mankind in all aspects of life was created by this single phenomenon. Every great creation or every genius started from something called thoughts. The ability to think, which is limitless and knows no bounds, is so captivating that, by far, it is man's greatest weapon.

A phenomenon so great that its potential can't be caged, a man's potential can only be measured by the potential of his mind. The mind is a double-edged sword; just as it creates, so can it destroy. The understanding of the mind is the enlightenment of man. Anyone who loses their ability to think loses their ability to fight, to have free will, to be different. They become humans with no individuality, left to the mercy of the one who taps into the power of the mind.

The mind is not just a product of the brain's physical processes but also a profound, complex phenomenon. It has been explored and studied by various disciplines like spirituality, psychology, and philosophy, among others. I'm sure at some point in life, the majority or possibly all of you have come across quotes like: "the only thing holding you back is your mind," or "your mind is the master," or "if you can dream it, you can make it happen."

I believe at some point most of you thought these to just be some motivational speech, just to boost confidence and that's all. But I want you to look at it from the perspective of possibilities. Whenever you have a problem that you can't stop thinking about and which disturbs you a lot, if you're self-conscious, you begin to notice that your mind automatically starts thinking of solutions to what's bothering you.

Now add that to the evolution of mankind. Before the creation of hot air balloons, it was never thought possible to be in the sky and see things from above. But someone wanted it so badly they thought of a way to make it happen. To be honest, everyone is intelligent; the only difference is how much you want something. Based on what you want and what you use your mind for, you unlock a part of your intelligence to tackle those problems. Intelligence itself is broken into 11 types:

- Linguistic: study of language

- Creative: the combination of intelligence and imagination to create originality

- Spatial: the ability to think in three different dimensions

- Kinesthetic: the ability to control the whole body

- Existential: a philosophical intelligence

These are just a few types of intelligence. The understanding of yourself helps you know where your strengths are and be conscious of those strengths as well as weaknesses. Thinking on a scale that might seem impossible helps you achieve things beyond what you thought to be your limit. Thinking of trying to do the impossible can hurt no one; neither are you limited to thinking about what is possible. Letting your mind loose to the possibilities and impossibilities of things breaks whatever limit you have on yourself.

A particular quote which says, "Your ability to think for more, means you haven't reached your limit," makes it clear how the limit to your mind plays a crucial role in the limit you'll reach in life. Just as the mind's potential is limitless, so is the potential of every human who walks this earth. Infinite possibilities lie in wait for you; don't be limited by your fears and weaknesses.

The difference a deep thinker has to the opposite is the quality of thoughts he/she entertains

It's true that the mind automatically works on solutions if you give the problem much thought. Sometimes, I'm surprised at the way I respond to some problems. The mind is truly a powerful weapon. Thank you for sharing, Francis.
