My advice to you is get married: if you find a good wife you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher.

The Embalmer's Husband
With the passing of her husband, it was no surprise to anyone that Rita withdrew from public life and the glare of the spotlight into which Estan’s job had so often dragged her. Preferring always the intimate company of her husband in their cottage, it was testament to conjugal devotion that she was invariably found on his arm at any and all social functions he was called on to attend. A loyal wife from the instant she uttered her vows, Rita’s devotion had been repaid by Estan’s unquestioning acceptance of her pastimes, which some might have said bordered on the macabre and were certainly well ensconced in the realms of the unusual.

What Generation Are We?
My kids were born in 2013 and 2019 (yeah, about a month ago), so which generation do they fall into? According to some online time-killing I did, the most recent generation is known as Generation Z, the Post-millennials, people who were born after 1997. They are the always-on generation. For them, technology like iPhones and high-speed wi-fi come as standard. They grew up in a world where the internet has always existed and only have a very faint memory of what a dial-up connection was.

“No, I am your father”
I can’t remember exactly when it was that I first heard Darth Vader make that dramatic reveal. Empire Strikes Back came out when I was only three but those five words have had a huge effect on my imagination, reading habits, watching choices and probably what I write as well.

Standing in a field...
Being an old git, who once upon a time enjoyed playing music but now, due to having two kids and no time, I decided to hang up my bass (at least for now, I tell myself) and join a ukulele club. Once a month, we get together and twiddle around, fairly melodiously on something that looks like a child’s guitar.

Dyslexic writing 1:
As someone who writes every day for work, would like to write more for pleasure and is also dyslexic, I’m no stranger to online spelling and grammar checkers. Not wanting to sound like an advert for Grammarly, but it really has saved my professional integrity on more than one occasion.

Dyslexic writing 2:
As a dyslexic, you have an advantage as a writer. Yes, that’s right an advantage. OK, the letters might move around and spelling may be some arcane art that you have a vague grasp of and can never really hope to master, but you also have a visual ability which lets you construct mental images in far greater depth.

The Dyslexic Writer
I’m a copywriter. And I’m dyslexic. Actually, thanks to the second point, the first one is temporarily untrue. I lost my job due to being dyslexic. Now, before you start screaming discrimination in my defense, it was undisclosed. I couldn’t really have expected my ex-boss to consider something she had no knowledge of, could I?

Finding your voice when writing
Whether it’s a shopping list or a horror story, the purpose of writing is to share information. But it’s how you share that information that makes the difference, it’s the tone you use that will keep people coming back to read more. That’s why big companies will spend thousands ensuring their messaging is on brand. The unique tone used by different companies is their personality, it is what makes them stand out from the crowd. And if the psychologist, Mehrabian is to be believed, the tone in which we are told something is much more important than the words being communicated.

Bring back baggy
Kids in the nineties were relaxed, we just wanted to chill out, and this was reflected in the clothes we wore. There was a comfortable, laid-back attitude that pervaded life and this was encapsulated perfectly by bands like the Happy Mondays, particularly in their song ‘Loose Fit’. “Don't need no skin tights in my wardrobe today”, Sean Rider sang and he was right.
