Let's Talk About AAVE! (A-O)
What is AAVE? AAVE, or African American Vernacular English, is a vocabulary created by and specifically catered to Black communities. Although many of these words and phrases have been made popular as slang among young people, AAVE is its own distinct dialect, whose words - like any dialect - are used for more than just expressing yourself. When it comes to language, there's often more involved than using a word or phrase. We must pay attention to the tone, contexts, and emotions we display within it. Using AAVE as a white or non-black person of colour is language appropriation. Language appropriation is the usage of language by oppressors in order to profit off or benefit from the oppressed.

What They Don't Tell You About Testosterone
This article discusses anatomy and needles. Hi, I'm Danny, and I've been on testosterone for two and a half years. When I met with my doctor in early 2022, I was taught the basics of testosterone replacement: how to do it, what it will change, and things to look out for. But like many transmasculine folks, I just took the doctor's word instead of doing my own research - and this means that I was greeted by many unexpected things during my transition journey. I wouldn't change anything, of course. With all the new information I've learned since starting testosterone two years ago, I think it'd be helpful to share with others who are just beginning their journey, or who just have an interest in being a better ally.

ocean eyes
do you see me? we sat by the ocean's edge, your bright eyes gleaming in the intimate gaze of twilight. we sat by the edge, watching the waters dance, listening to the waves' tranquility. a cool breeze ruffled your hair as you absently poked at the sand, unaware of my tentative gaze. you are beautiful, and so is nature, but i never liked the ocean until i saw your eyes.

There's No Such Thing as Laziness.
The Concept of Laziness: How it Came to Be, And How it Rules Society The idea of laziness has existed for centuries, but its definition has evolved with society. It's a concept which was created in the sixteenth century by capitalists and English Protestants. It emerged during a time when religious, diligent, and working-class citizens were considered the chosen ones. It was believed that those who worked hard would be saved by God, and those who were lazy would be condemned. During the colonial period of the United States, laziness become a justification for white colonizers to mistreat underperforming slaves - because dutiful slaves were praised, and disobedient slaves were lazy.

An autistic meltdown is not a temper tantrum
April is World Autism Month - a month to increase understanding of autism spectrum disorder, and work together to end the stigma and discrimination that many autistic people face. In Canada, an estimated one of fifty youth have been diagnosed with autism. It's important to remember that autism is a spectrum disorder. This means that individual needs vary among those living with it, and no two autistic people are the same. Where one person might show competency in verbal communication, another may rely on communication devices such as apps or drawings.

Drowning your regrets won't heal you
This is an excerpt from my novel, Moonchildren. You can read more here. _________________ Everyone wants to feel like they mean something. Even if you believe that humans are all born for no reason, and that life has no meaning, nobody wants to spend their entire lives alone. Some insist they prefer isolation, that other people are too much effort and time. Some insist it’s safer or more comfortable to be alone. Maybe this is true. Even if someone spends their entire life in solitude, they deserve to feel like their existence means something.
