Under The Magical Midsummer Sun

A Poem

You were older than me by two years

So cool

So handsome

As you driving your dad’s Mercedes and I adored you from a distance

When you passed me in the school corridor

My heart raced

I prayed

I feared

That you would notice me but

What would I say if you were to stop?

Said hello

Smiled

Just the thought sent my head spinning

My palms sweating

Heart aching

I longed to hear your voice and feel your touch

As the school disco, I watched you again, from the distance

Timid

And jealous

As the girls crowded around you, the star of the hockey team

They flirted

And giggled

At your jokes

Yet you danced with nobody and I nurtured hope

Perhaps they were

Too brash

Too loud

Too much in your face

Maybe you’d prefer somebody like me

Someone quieter

Calmer

Still the problem persisted

How to get you to notice me?

I was young

Insignificant

Why would you pay any attention to somebody like me?

Then came the Midsummer’s Eve

A night of magic

And spells

We gathered on the beach to celebrate

The longest day

The nightless night

When the sun never sets

I spotted you from afar

Your relaxed gait

Blond, curly hair

Your laughter

My heart seized beating for a fraction

Or perhaps an eternity

Your steps headed

Directly towards me

My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth

A warmth spread

Up my neck

And face

Panic mode threatened, I wanted to run

But my legs

They wouldn’t obey

So I just sat my eyes glued to you as you approached

Slowly

Confidently

Miraculously

Until you stood in front of me so close I could smell

Your skin

And count

The freckles on your face

You held your hand out to me and I mirrored your smile

Shaking

I placed my hand in yours

It felt so natural

So right

My hi was a whisper

Under the magical midsummer sun
