The Hour Glass

An entrancing distraction

By Ryan BurkeyPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

You count the seconds

I try to count your grains

Impossible

You are infinite

Except you aren’t really

You will eventually run out

In the meanwhile, I’m mesmerized by your panicked sand

Tumbling frantically

In a hopeless, helpless race against the inevitable

Oh how long I could stare at you

An entrancing distraction, that’s what you are!

Until your last granule falls into the abyss below

Time’s up!

Shall we start again?

Once more I’ll turn you upside ‘round

And watch you work in silence

An old-world instrument that measures moments in time

You are captivating and alluring,

Mr. Hour Glass of mine
