Sunday is for selection
Many will experience rejection
Being set free
To finish their degree
Headed back to higher education classes
Podium lectures attended by the masses
Where the professor may not know names
Officiating their academic games
Filled with credit hours
Testing life’s budgeting time priority power
While watering the blooming knowledgeable flower
As for the lucky who advance
In a corporate sponsored spectacle marketed as “The Big Dance”
Earning more points on the hardwood
Acknowledges who is entertaining and good
Bringing tempting fame
Proclaiming a brand-new name
After completing the hoopla game
Are things the same?
When the entourage appear
Business like from those who cheer
Using round wheels
Making the deals
Boasting scoring and steals
Not forgetting buckets made
Confirming the credible blue-chip grade
But are these students free?
Deciding on their own ‘is this good for me?’
Reflect upon that question
And benefit from the debatable lesson
When walking across the stage
Sporting a youthful age
Contemplating who will end up with a respectable wage
An athlete doing physical work,
Or the cubicle assistant not blowing their cork?
Who at five?
Feeling alive
Enjoys the daily happy hour
And discounted appetizers sweet and sour
Watching the professional star
Performing on the television at the bar
Free to go home
To plan the next day answering the phone
Climbing the career ladder
Always wondering “what’s the matter?”
As the basket’s string is cut down
And the champions are deemed toast of their collegiate town
It will be time to wear the cap and gown
Marching to the graduation sound
Adult freedom soon to be abound
During this one shining moment defining success
Passing the four-year bachelor’s test
That opens the door to other competitions to be the best
Nurturing a mature mind
Strengthening independent decision-making skills hard to deny
When judging taking a two or a three
It is the honest bachelorette or bachelor who is free
Putting on their wall a University degree
