False Teeth

A Poem

By EJ FergusonPublished 2 years ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

No wonder you have false teeth

Acid tongues turn teeth all rotten and weak

Wears them away

Burns them all out

So they curl up and sizzle like salted slugs

And I'm sure that the acid tastes sweet

Because you can't get enough of the cathartic relief

The gleam of your porcelain smile says it all

as your bile-sour words boil blood

The glass on your windowsill waits, I'm convinced,

to receive your grin in the dark

and while you're asleep, your face sinks right in

and the water on the sill fills with soft night and stars

One night, I saw the moon in there

framed in teeth, bone-white and floating,

The teeth seemed to scream in a pitiful silence

but it was the moon in their mouth that was drowning
