The shortest day and the longest night
On the northern hemisphere
Falls on the day of earths obliquity
It’s also the traditional feast day
Of saint thomas the apostle
Where those living with grief in church
Leave chairs empty to honour their loss
It’s also the day of blue Christmas
Otherwise known as the longest night
They honour their losses as they
Mark their winter solstice with candles
For the southern hemisphere,
This day marks the shortest nights
And the longest days, summer solstice
But nowhere in the history books
Does it say that December 21st
Is also your birthday, in heaven now
I would rather not look at your empty chair
It’s been too many years of feeling blue
On our third rock from the sun
The equinox marks equal day and night
When the sun sits above the equator
Making the day and night equally matched
If I meet you on the equator on this day instead
Can heaven and earth meet for a moment
So we can stand together without chairs?

My research into the meaning of ‘EQUINOX’ led me to learn that there is quite a few significant entries in the history books for the same day as the solstice on December 21st. This day has a completely different meaning to me, however all of these people who have these traditions have based them around dealing with the empty spaces in their lives left over from loss and grief. This I can relate to greatly now for on this day I have no one to wish Happy Birthday to anymore.
Thanks for reading 🕊️
