Blackbird, first one up,
Celebrates the arrival of an early spring morning.
Saluting the dawn
With vocal acrobatics.
He must also feel a lightness in his heart,
As Winter reluctantly begins to recede.
She still clings on to the wet, cold ground,
Refusing to slip beneath,
Until she has pierced ribs and toes
With her icy fingernails
A few more times.
It's a day to embrace the small things!
To go outside
And drink in the early spring sights:
Crocuses adorn flowerbeds and parks
With jewel colours and delicate petals.
Daffodils gingerly open paper-like
Cases, to reveal honey scented
Stamens.
Spring is still weak from her
Long time away,
But she has
Fire inside,
And as each colour
Suppresses the dark winter shadows,
She gains strength
To finally chase away
Her savage cold cousin.
