As the sirens scream,
A windchime permeates their deafening cry.
The blue lights beckon closer, a rising tide,
What once seemed solid, now a mere sandcastle, trapped, awaiting it’s erosion as the pair collide.
A sharp breathe in, the cold air feels thin,
Imagining postcards on bare grey walls, postcards of places you’ve never been.
A slow exhale,
The world fades away,
A swift movement to un-cock hammers the final coffin nail.
As the sirens scream,
A final rush of adrenaline makes a river where was a bloodstream.
This life shall not end inside a cage,
A defending bang, finality for the wild-eyed, who chose over bending to stiffen inside the grave.

Balloons and a parade and shit
They say things happen when you're not looking for them. Falling in love, making a new friend, finding a new opportunity, conceiving a baby. It's not been my experience, in general. Indeed generally I have found that when I am looking for nothing, that is what I get, but this week, while I was busy not looking for it, I crossed that golden threshold of 5000 Vocal reads. Why this is the golden threshold I do not know, only I remember quite some time ago a rash of people I had subscribed to all posting this landmark at a similar time, and thinking how utterly unlikely 5000 reads seemed for me.

Letter to our Queer & Trans Youth
Hey, you. I thought I’d start this letter by telling you a little about myself, just so you know who you’re dealing with. I’m an emotional dad, father to three amazing kids who we met through the foster care system, and whose presence in our lives has really transformed my sense of responsibility to the communities that surround us. The connections we’ve made with one another, with our extended families, and with the communities where we live and look for belonging have catapulted us into this whirlwind of emotional tumult which, while not easy by any stretch of the measure, has also been remarkably healing. I realize ours is really only a one-sided chosen family, since our kids didn’t get to choose to live here, but I’d like to think that they did choose to let us love them, which allowed them to grow to love us. And I think that’s where I want to go with this letter- to a place where you can find belonging and healing- even if the pathway there may be peppered with some emotional tumult.
