If you see a dog

On your porch

Or if one approaches

Remember to smile

They can smell fear

🐕

If you see a shark

On the water

Or if one approaches

Remember to stay still

They are attracted to sound

🦈

If you see a zombie

On your street

Or if one approaches

Remember to play dumb

They crave human brains

🧟‍♂️

If you see a cat

On your bed

Or if one approaches

Remember to stay awake

They steal your breath

🐈‍⬛

If you see a UFO

On your property

Or if one approaches

Remember to stay out of light beams

They abduct people

🛸

If you see a cult

On your block

Or if one approaches

Remember to bring your own drinks

They make special Kool-Aid

~

Author's note,

This was created for James and Oneg's Summer writing challenge. I was tagged in a Facebook post asking me to participate. I usually don't do these challenges though I do enjoy seeing them on Facebook groups like Vocal Social Society.

I am a very methodical writer. I often struggle to get pieces in before contests deadlines and poems for me could be a couple weeks or months even years of setting it aside and working on it again. That being said I am very grateful I was asked to participate in this. I should participate more often this was a good way to get me out of my comfort zone.

And my apologies this was the best I could do on short notice. It isn't the first time but I almost never write and publish the same day. The challenge didn’t require that but with my work schedule I pretty much had 24 hours to get this done. And I have to say I am in awe of my friends here on Vocal who can publish stories, poems, and articles that are all very great and good pieces of writing seemingly on a daily basis. Especially fiction stories editing a fiction story takes me at least a week lol.

This poem was created for James and Oneg’s last line challenge and was based on the last line of an email I received that was a preview of a Nextdoor app post about a lost dog.

I though sharks followed blood, sound too, echo location and such. Better late than never.

You did a fantastic job with this one! I’m glad you were able to participate and that you got out of your comfort zone for this :) Side note: all of our challenges are timeless. If you want to try challenge #3 in ten years from now, love it! Lol That’s the fun of these challenges, is that the prompts will always stay up- so if you get writers block in a few months, you can always go back :)

  • Lol, my favourite part was cats stealing breath! And come on, you never have to apologise for anything! This poem was brilliant!
