Fantastic Story, Terrible Delivery. Top Story - August 2023.
Sometime in early 2019, I decided I'd had enough breaks from writing. I found an online school claiming to help you write a 50k word novel in six months if you followed their program. I signed up, met some cool people, and started really writing. As it turned out, the classes were crap, but the people I met changed my life.

Fire & Ash
I remember the scent of burnt flesh most clearly. It’s nearly impossible to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced the smell for themselves. Ask anyone who has though, and they’ll tell you; No matter how often you bathe, or what pretty little perfumes you might spray yourself with, no matter how many years pass, you can’t ever completely rid yourself of it.

The Eye of the World. Runner-Up in Book Club Challenge.
When I turned twelve, my mother lent me a paperback novel. She normally preferred to buy hardbacks, but this one wasn’t formatted in your typical six by nine-inch trim. It was an eight-hundred-page manuscript roughly the size and shape of a hardback. The cover art featured a warrior atop a huge black horse set against a full moon. Beside him in stark contrast rode a petite woman in blue carrying a staff and sitting astride a small but elegant white horse. I can still recall the tiny bat-like creature flying just under the title, ‘The Eye of the World’.

Critique - The Matrix
Of all the great cinematic art to grace the big screen in the late 90's, arguably none had a greater impact than 1999's, 'The Matrix'. This revolutionary film would not only receive worldwide recognition, but its style and use of ‘bullet time’ visual effects are still used in movies today.

La chaqueta de cuero
White people, Miguel mused, have the craziest names for alcoholic drinks. Take this shot, for example. A little Jäegermeister, rum, and some Goldschläger, and you had a drink they called, 'Liquid Cocaine'. The color reminded him more of caramel candy than any of the white powdered stuff he'd ever seen. Maybe cocaine is brown before the refinement process starts, who knows?

An Awkward Reception. Top Story - August 2023.
Terry knows he’s going to brain Mr. Perfect soon. He watches, head throbbing, as the groom slow dances with his new wife, Mrs. Bethany Graylock, to Elvis Presley’s, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’. Bethany, Terry’s childhood friend. The woman I love, he thinks. That should be me with her.

A Bad Date
In hindsight, I should have expected the date to end in disaster. The day started off wrong. That was the first clue. We planned to go hiking a local trail, a hobby we both enjoyed according to our profiles on eHarmony. What better way to get to know someone than to go on a nature walk together?

The WindFlower
Aeolus pointed to his enemies, and they fell dead before him. Battle raged only feet in front of him. Fading sunlight reflected against battle hardened swords as the sound of steel crashed against steel. The smell of blood, sweat and feces permeated thick in the warm summer air. Already buzzards circled overhead, waiting to feast.

An Ominous Song
Time was slipping away, and with it, Joon's hopes. He needed to find Wymand's portfolio soon. It must be here! He thought, running the candlelight along the joints and cracks of Wymand's heavy desk. There had to be a hidden latch or a pressure switch here. He probed with experienced fingers sensitive to anything seemingly out of place.
