The Eye Of Ludum
"We shouldn't be here," Elna whispered. Jochen glanced towards her but didn't stop moving forward. Elna's face troubled him more than her words. For an elf, her complexion seemed unusually pale in the torchlight. He knew better than to ignore her words, though. Elna's foresight had saved his skin at least half a dozen times.

A Fork In the Road
$5k. Tonight. If you don’t answer the call, this gets posted to social media. Jack reads the note for the fourth time, glances at the damning photo of his partner, and reads the note again. The detective in him wants to have it analyzed by MPD’s forensic team. Chances are slim, but maybe they’d find a fingerprint belonging to the perp who’d written this, or find the font came from an old typewriter or something.

I'm Still Learning About Systemic Effects. Top Story - March 2024.
I'm still learning about the effects of systemic racism. One of the mistakes I, like many white Americans, have made is believing we've come close to solving the embarrassing racial problems that have been plaguing our country since its inception. The mistake comes not from believing that many (though nowhere near all) Americans no longer discriminate on the basis of skin color, but in failing to understand the myriad of complicated issues arising from ever present layers of discrimination throughout our history.

Love Is . . .
To me, love is a word impossible to define. Have you ever looked it up in the dictionary? I did. There are twenty-three definitions, fourteen as a noun and nine as a verb, but they don't even scratch the surface. So how does one define love? What is the essence of this captivating word we toss around haphazardly, like so many dollar bills at a county fair?

Jack Rollins. Content Warning.
They melted his eyes with coals. I can still hear the sizzling pops his corneas made, bursting as the glowing rocks liquified his eyeballs. The sweet, putrid stench of burning flesh and his agonized screams will likely haunt my nightmares forever.

I'll Play With You. Top Story - January 2024.
You’ll blame the dog when I kill you. I don’t blame you. After all, look at my face. You used to think I was beautiful, but now? Some of my face is missing, the plastic pieces soon to pass through his digestive system and end up baking with the pile of shit he leaves in your neighbors front lawn. The remaining cracked bits make me look like a puzzle made from a photo of Leatherface. My hair, once dark and lustrous, is nearly gone now, torn from the delicate holes my maker painstakingly crafted with her hands.

Go Big or Go Home
Last year was an amazing ride for me on Vocal. I went from mostly silent to publishing almost 36k words here (not counting all the crap writing that didn't make it)! Twenty-four stories, seven of which made top story, one that made runner up for one of the challenges, and one that made it to the final round for Vocal's annual writing awards. I feel so blessed. It's hard to put into words the euphoria one feels when seeing something they've worked hard on being enjoyed and at times praised by people who don't owe you a thing.
