Ōugān. Top Story - June 2024.
It’s not like I can avoid them. They taunt me from the front of my local fruit and veg grocer, their dimpled waxy peel catching the light as if to say nice to see you again, Sunny like some off-colour joke. A bunch of bananas poke holes in the biodegradable bag while I sweep the back shelves for this week’s food. I notice the oranges from the corner of my eye and feel my stomach turn. Looks like oranges aren’t on the menu anymore, either.

Jingle-Jangle Dance
The afternoon sun spotlights the lime-green grass beneath the shrub where Jingles hides. Golden beams poke through the foliage but don’t reveal him in his vantage point to his prey. In the present moment, his muscles are spring-loaded and on the very brink of catapulting him forward toward the unknowing bird.

Friend of the Family. Top Story - April 2024.
When people say that someone is a family friend, it usually extends to an entire family being friends with another. In small towns where the average-tasting barista coffee is served with a side of gossip, and the elderly eye everyone with a certain disdain, the true meaning of this phrase isn’t yet lost.

Psithurism Concerto
This year I am tall enough to play the symphony with my brethren, after their centuries of practice. Legend says it began with only one, the Maestro, in an open field. He crossed the meadows of his manor on a tumultuous night, feeling the Westerly Winds push Him uphill before tumbling down a slope and pulling up to greet the next mound of dirt. I wonder what possessed His mind that night. What ghost gave Him the knowledge of where to plant the early musicians that would birth more to fill the empty seats of the orchestra? The foresight the ghost gave Him clearly bestowed the Maestro with a terrifying wit and alarming sense for music which He couldn't yet hear.

Naming Colour. Top Story - March 2024.
They say that the name of a person determines their personality and I think this is half-true. What most people don’t see is the colour of a name. The name determines a person's colour, and their colour inspires their personality.

Vedasto's Curse: The Challenge
For part 1: https://vocal.media/fiction/vedasto-s-curse-the-champion ~~~ Chiara's shins splinter with each heave of the cart uphill. Her companion pushed the wooden cart ahead of him for 9 days until they reached the edge of Gois Forest, where his stoicism was beaten down by the uneven track. Each day, Lorenzo collects scars to add to the jagged pink lines already adorning his skin. The same wounds decorate her father's arms. The boy suffered hard labour to build a new road out of their hometown, so it is no wonder she hasn't heard a word of complaint from him on their journey so far.

Vedasto's Curse: The Champion
Lorenzo’s calloused thumbs trace the intricate reeded border of the golden coin. The reflection of the sun beams into his tired eyes while he kneels before the fountain. For generations the coin has traded pockets from his great-grandfather to finally be Lorenzo’s boon, however it would be an heirloom no longer. Feelings of guilt are defeated by desperation, and Lorenzo grips the coin with a steely resolve. Despair has run him ragged, stolen his youthfulness; the boy has the burdens of a man, and the scars of one too.
