The Tragic 9-Day Reign of Lady Jane Grey
Throughout history, religious intolerance and power struggles have often led to injustice. England’s Tudor dynasty is considered to be one of its most significant, but King Henry VIII’s efforts to produce a male heir set up a chain of events that would result in the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. One of these was Lady Jane Grey.

How to Make a Pancake in the Oven
My family and friends adore my Swedish pancakes, but I’m not quite so enthusiastic about making them. Either everyone else eats while I make batch after batch; or have to get up early, make them, and stash them in the oven on warm until we all sit down to eat. Neither option is very appealing. I still make them once in a while, especially for birthdays, but when somebody asks for pancakes, I often opt for this excellent substitute: Manka’s Babies.

In Praise of the Bellissima Bellini
My favorite food and wine pairing is the bellini cocktail. In essence, it's fruit juice for grownups, but that description hardly does it justice. Prosecco and white peach puree team up for a sophisticated yet entirely approachable potent potable. Like the mimosa, which pairs sparkling wine with orange juice, the bellini is lovely to have along with a sumptuous brunch. But it's also the perfect thirst quencher at any time, especially on a hot summer day in Venice, where it was invented.

Every Day Above Ground is a Good Day
'Tis the season to be grateful. This year, it isn't easy. It seems as if the forces of nature are aligned against us: the forests ignite, the virus consumes, the hurricanes level the landscape. In some places, it's already beginning to snow. Couple that with financial uncertainty and a presidential race that has sharply divided our nation into "us" and "them," we have the makings of a season not of gratitude but of existential dread.

Which of These 10 Toxic Social Media Superheroes Are You?
Everybody, including me, loves superheroes. One of the reasons we like them, however, is because they’re fictional. They stretch the imagination and have talents and abilities about which we clumsy mortals can only dream, but we don’t have to live with one.
