Writing with my Husband

This is a sneak peak on how I come up with my ideas.

My husband and I have been role playing (rp) characters we create since we have been together. For seven years, some of the characters we have created I'm not ready to say goodbye to. I always ask him if I can use the inspiration for any story we make together if I see potential for a novel and just ad my own spin to it. His answer is always yes. This idea in particular we worked on together for two days I wasn't ready to say goodbye to. But currently I am working on a major project right now. So I wrote a brief scene on a google doc so I wouldn't forget it and filed it. Under Joaquin and Sophie Project. I started prepping for this project when I got inspired to write it towards the end of NaNoWriMo 2023 writing each character's back storyline now. I'm working now on the Villain's backstory arc and I always have fun doing that for some reason. To create a villain so fucked up that my audience would hate to pieces.

Anyways here is brief scene I wrote down, and a brief character information and author commentary. Please tell me if you all do the same thing as I do. Or is mine unique compared to most authors.

Scene I wrote

As I drive the eight hour drive with Cataleya in the passenger seat she was talking my ear off. I was nervous about going back to my hometown staying at my best friend’s house. Her brother Joaquin and I have a very large history. Last time I checked he was dating some blonde ass Carmen Electra wannabe. I start to feel uncomfortable of thinking about him I couldn’t stop thinking about that day our last day we ever saw each other. We went to a party together after I graduated to celebrate I got accept to the college I always wanted to attend. The more I thought about the last day the more I got aroused.

“Why are you so quiet Sophie?” Cate spoke up.

“I’m nervous about seeing him again. It’s so long but I never forgot him. I know you don’t want to hear about the whole first love being your brother and all.”

She giggled uncomfortably.

I smile fondly.

“You never stopped loving him did you?”

“No, you know when he got that football injury I wanted to see him but you suggested I didn’t. Would have taken care of him.” I looked back on that memory.

“Well couldn’t if you wanted to you know how men are girl he wouldn’t have recognised you.”

I look down briefly the wave of disappointment hit me like a title wave.

She wasn’t lying he wouldn’t have recognised me. Probably would have thought oh god sexy nurse who is she? Joaquin was always a lady’s man for the longest time I was his dirty secret. It was as if he was ashamed of me. At least in high school it felt like he was. Never wanted to tell anyone I was his. That’s the hardest thing in the world when I thought I was his fuck buddy.

As I pull into her house this felt more like home then my actual home. I practically grew up here in this mansion in Palm Beach.

“Hey are you okay?”

“Oh yes, I’m okay, it’s you I’m worried about.” Cate smirked.

“Oh I know you ain’t telling me he is single.”

Cate the short light skin Puerto Rican with a sassy twist looks at me her light skin best friend with long curly hair. I have all the right curves that would turn any man on.

“He is single and can’t even remember his first real love. I feel like I owe you guys for that. You both deceive to be together.”

When she said this I knew that there was only one thing that was left to do confront him. I’m nervous as hell what if he doesn’t remember me. What if the the only reason he remembers me is he needs a one nightstand. We never made it clear for each other it was to late and it was after Jake nearly raped me. If Joaquin wasn’t there I would have and drunk too. He drove me home and I was grounded by dad until the day I departed for College.

Joaquin Ortiz is a Quarterback at Andrew Liberty High School in Palm Beach, Florida. He has a sister named Cataleya Oritz. Cate as Sophie Johnnson refers to her is her best friend.

(If I don’t write this done when it is time to write this project and prep for it I will forget everything.)

This storyline has a lot of potential when hubby and I wrote it together I saw a lot of promise honestly. I think it could be a coming of age from high school to college. Side note: Why is it in YA there is no actually detailed sex scenes it’s not like High School kids aren’t having sex. Hell my old high school mate she got Pregnant at prom the truly cliche she is. The whole keep kids peer in literature isn’t really real. Realistically teenagers are having sex even when I was in high school. So I will be writing this Coming of Age series with a little bite. And for those who might be reading this commentary This is how my best novels come from the help of my husband. When we rp (role play) characters we create together he inspires a lot of stories. So I guess you could say he is my co-writer and I always ask if I can use these ideas for a novel series. After starting my novel project I’m currently working on still prepping Eclipsed Hearts Series. I want to finish that before I dive into a new word.

Thank You, Hubby for all the ideas and fun with every RP.

How wonderful to write a story in partnership, based on characters you have dreamt up together. I often wonder what it would be like to work on a collaborative writing project so thanks for sharing this example of how it can work in practice.
