I donā€™t know what is going on with time but if I didnā€™t know better, Iā€™d be convinced that someoneā€¦or something was messing with the calendar. So, it would seem, here I am again with the Vocal + Assist Picks. As ever, itā€™s been really challenging to choose so few out of such a vast array of incredible talent.

In no particular order of any sort:

Novel Allen

A delicately written story that intertwines the shifting perspectives of the modern condition. The charm here lies in its relatable characters, especially Grandma Mae, whose gentle humour and straightforward view of life wonā€™t fail to invoke a smile.

A go to for this post-modernist life we lead - where only too often we find our world behind a screen instead of where it really thrives, outdoors. A genuine tale of hope and a reminder that grandma, really does know best!

Rachel Deeming

Featuring a misplaced rubber duck Rachel takes us down the river of her beautifully crafted words and deposits us in an ocean of hope and possibility.

An unassuming tale that harnesses the spirit of childhood innocence and the bonds we form with our favourite toys. The story evokes empathy in its generosity of spirit. There are elements of loss, but the overarching theme of lovee and resilience speaks volumes.

A mellow but impactful read for anyone seeking to lose themselves if only for a moment. No matter the kind of day you are having this loveliness will undoubtedly uplift your spirits!

Stephanie Hoogstad

A wonderfully heart-string tugging tale told from the perspective of the much cherished 'Blue Bear', this succinct but perfectly formed narrative takes us on a gentle journey through longing, loss, and eventual reconciliation.

With both a remarkable emotional depth and a unique perspective, the story of Blue Bear's journey is a refined metaphor for the very real - and often times challenging human experience. However, at the heart of it all we a presented with hope in the form of resilience and our infinitely enduring capacity to love and be loved.

Natasha Collazo

Blurry lines

A thoughtful and masterful poem from Natasha Collazo. Exploring themes of self-acceptance and responsibility with a stark honesty, this piece is a poignant reflection on the all too human desire to belong. Offering a thought provoking, poignant reminder of the importance of seeing ourselves and the world we inhabit with openness and clarity.

Universally relatable with a deeply compelling voice, it is an important read for anyone who is pondering their own place in the world. Or, indeed, anyone who has ever contemplated such things.

.

Kp

A stunning exploration of the need for emotional healing in the throes of a break up. KPā€™s emotionally charged poem perfectly encapsulates the upheaval and desperate need to reclaim identity in the wake of dramatic changes.

This deeply heartfelt offering is a perfect read for anyone who has experienced the end of a relationship. Its raw and honest portrayal of the process of self-reclamation is incredibly relatable, not to mention, masterfully crafted.

Tressa Rose

A truly gorgeous narrative that offers an insight into the shifting tides of self-confidence and doubt as we work through life. It is truly a remarkable portrayal of the gradual process of rebuilding and mastering self-belief. With a clear emphasises on the importance of self-love, the story offers up a critique of the positive and negative impact of external influences. But ultimately, it is a delightful offering that presents us with the very real and transformative power of supportive relationships. Simply put. A must for anyone who ever felt the sting of self-doubt or anyone who ever got just a little bit lost along the way.

Thank you to all of the creators on Discord and Facebook for sharing your talent. And, as ever a huge thank you to the curation team Rick Henry Christopher, River Joy, Oneg Tristan, Darnell Lee, Jim Delaney Howe, Lamar Wiggins and Mother Combes.

As I contemplated the pieces above, and many more this week, I was reminded of the timeless words of Emily Dickinson:

"Hope is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops at all."

Thatā€™s what words do isnā€™t? At the heart of the matter. Sharing the human experience binds us together, and our stories here on Vocal and beyond whether they be happy or sad. Poignant or choice are a reminder of all that we are and oftentimes, all that we can be.
