The State of Marriage Equality

President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court might put LGBTQ+ rights in danger

By Mark Wesley PritchardPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

With about three weeks left until Election Day, it’s important that we vote for politicians who will fight for equal rights for all people, including the LGBTQ+ community. Since coming out as gay in February 2012, supporting the rights for all gay and lesbian people was something that I was passionate about. Three years later, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that marriage equality was the law of the land. It was a historic day and victory for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community.

In August of this year, two important decisions were made by the Supreme Court. The first one regarding the bathroom case in Virginia. Gavin Grimm, a transgender male, sued Gloucester County in 2015, when he was a sophomore. Grimm was denied access to the boys’ restroom. A Virginia appeals court ruled that Grimm was protected under a law barring sex discrimination. The second story was about a two-year-old being denied citizenship because the girl’s birth was out of wedlock and the biological parents were never married. Later on that month, a federal court in Atlanta ruled that Simone Mize-Gregg was a U.S. citizen.

President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, has a very conservative record. If confirmed, the 48-year-old will become the youngest Justice on the Supreme Court. His nomination of Barrett is dangerous, because she is opposed to issues such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and abortion. Marriage equality is at risk of possibly being overturned. This is why I encourage everyone to go out to the polls and vote. One date to remember is November 4, the day after the election. Why is this particular day important? It’s because the Supreme Court will decide if a Catholic agency based out of Pennsylvania can reject same-sex parents from adopting children.

Former Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden is the person that I’ll be voting for to become the next commander-in-chief on Election Day. I believe that he’ll fight for the rights of all people, including the LGBTQ+ community. If President Trump gets re-elected for another four years, the rights of LGBTQ+ people will be in jeopardy. He’s not the right person to lead our country. In fact, for the last four years, he’s divided this country even further, refusing to condemn white supremacy in the first presidential debate with Joe Biden, made derogatory comments about Mexicans and other minorities, and so on. We need a leader who will condemn racism and hate on all forms. We need someone who will actually bring this country together.

LGBTQ+ rights is something that I talk about on a regular basis, because I don’t want my fellow brothers and sisters to be discriminated against, just because of who they are. I want them to live happy and prosperous lives. Biden and Senator Kamala Harris will fight for our rights and make this country better than Trump did. Whether you’ll be voting by mail or in person on November 3, your voice matters and important. Hatred, racism, and bigotry has no place in the United States of America.
