Kemi Baden More Popular Than Suella Braverman.

Badenoch Potential Replacement for Sunak?

By Nicholas BishopPublished about a month ago 3 min read
Shadow Cabinet Minister: Kemi Badenoch.

With the absolute thrashing, the Tories took on July 4, the Tories are stuck on which way to go. In a shadow cabinet meeting after the general election, Kemi Badenoch gave Sunak a severe dressing down. Badenoch attacked Mr. Sunak over his absolute disaster of an election campaign.

One thing that did not help Mr. Sunak was when he left D-Day commemorations in Normandy early. To pursue his election campaigning. Many thought this was highly inappropriate and an insult to all those who had given their lives on D-Day. Many thought Sunak would have been better to hold until the autumn to call for a general election. However, Sunak called the election on 4 July, and by that act, he is the master of his downfall. Although, there is no guarantee that Sunak would have won later in the year either.

Mr. Sunak will stay on as leader until a new leader is selected. Kemi Badenoch is popular among members of the Conservative Party. Badenoch is more popular among members than Suella Braverman. Braverman was popular at one time but now her popularity is waning. Badenoch and Braverman have already started jousting for the leadership of the Conservative Party on X. Badenoch described Braverman as being in a"meltdown". Of course, Braverman denied this. Braverman, when interviewed whether she would run for the party leadership has been pretty coy about it.

A survey from the Conservative Party Members Project run by the Queen Mary University of London and Sussex by 'YouGov' asked 725 Tory members for their views. Once the "none" and the "don't know" answers were taken away, Ms. Badenoch had the support of 31% of the members. Suella Braverman, on the other hand, was on 16% of support. Conversely, Tom Tugendhat had 15% support. Braverman and Badenoch have the support of those who backed Liz Truss (no longer an MP). Tom Tugendhat has the support of members who gave Rishi Sunak their backing.

Suella Braverman has the support of the over-50s. Tom Tugendhat is supported by the under-50s. Kemi Badenoch has all-round support from across the generational divide. If Boris Johnson were to be included in these stats, he would lead Badenoch by 10-20%. Nigel Farage is level with Jeremy Hunt at 10%.

Johnson is not a Tory MP and whether he will return to parliament, as his hero Churchill did, remains unknown. Nigel Farage, meanwhile, as Leader of Reform UK has been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Clacton. Jeremy Hunt Shadow Chancellor, will not be standing for the leadership. Hunt has already stood and didn't get anywhere in yet another Tory leadership bid.

Labour has a whopping 411 seats led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Mr. Starmer is currently in the US hobnobbing with Joe Biden. Mr. Biden will be standing for a second time to be President in November. It's likely, however, that next time Sir Keir flies to Washington, Donald Trump may be 'POTUS' (President Of The United States). That will certainly be an interesting relationship. However, I digress dear reader, Labour now has a 172-seat majority. The Tories are reduced to a rump party of 121 MPs. Labour now has a massive majority to push through policies they deem fit for the UK. The Tories have 5 years now to row themselves back to power. The path back to power for the Conservative Party may not be that simple.

The 14 years of devastation and disastrous rule they brought to Britain will be long remembered. The Reform UK Party aims to be the next government in 5 years and Farage as Prime Minister (best of luck with that under the current 'First Past The Post' system). The Liberal Democrats now have under their down-to-earth yet outgoing leader Ed Davey 72 seats.

So, it does not matter who leads the Conservative Party for the foreseeable. The Tories who always arrogantly proclaim they have the right to rule and be the natural party of government have taken a severe 'kick in the teeth'. The Tories were a shambles in government and remain a shambles in opposition.
