4 Ways to Support Your Country During Tough Times

Tips to work together and make it though this year

By Dennis McKonkiePublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Most people would agree that the times are fairly troubling these days. And with it comes stress, worry, confusion or anger. One of the most important things you can do? Don't get stuck in it. Recognize that things will get better. Stand by your country and see it through, even on the hardest days. Along with hanging on tight to this positive outlook, there are other things you can do to show support and love for your country. Keep reading for four ideas to make a difference.

1.) Support the Economy

Before you purchase anything, learn more about the item's origin. Now more than ever it's important to support the domestic economy — not only does this support the country financially, it ensures employment numbers continue to grow and that jobs stay here. Shopping local should be prioritized. It's what the smaller or developing businesses truly depend on. But shopping isn't the only way to keep the domestic economy healthy... if you're an active or veteran member of the armed forces, DoD or National Guard (or someone in your household is) consider opening a military credit union account. Wondering how this differs from a typical credit union or bank? Depending on whatever phase of service or life you or your family members are in, you can benefit from financial education or support to help you through any transitional times.

2.) Protect and Serve

One of the bravest things one can do is to serve their country. If you or someone in your family is within the age limits and you've considered it as an option, there's no better time than right now to pursue it. Doing research first on different branches of the military and their requirements would be a good place to start. Along with the amazing feeling of supporting your country, becoming a member of the military holds some amazing opportunities for travel, on-the-job training, self improvement and education. Maybe you come from a long line of service members and want to continue the tradition. Whatever the reason... if you're wanting to support your country, serving is an excellent way.

3.) Encourage Patriotism

When you turn on the news, chances are what you see is pretty unsettling. Repeated exposure to this can definitely drag you down, raising questions on issues you thought you understood before. Maybe you feel it's tough to have discussions with friends or loved ones due to varying viewpoints. If you feel yourself slipping and becoming negative, try your hardest to stop. Step away from the news and emotionally heated discussions and reconnect with the reasons you love your country. Do you have kids? If you do, this is a crucial time to educate them and ensure they don't lose sight of what truly matters. But even if you don't have kids... you're never too old to learn (or just take a refresher course). Fly a flag on your front porch. Be supportive of those who protect you every day. Embrace differences with grace. Don't forget that you have a right to voice your opinion just as much as the next person does.

4.) Consider the Source

It's no secret that the news can be biased, depending on the source as well as your political affiliation or personal beliefs. And it's also no secret that it can all be very convincing. When it comes to where you do get your information, make sure it's reputable. Compare information and fact search on your own (again, with reputable sources). By doing this, you're able to make the most informed decisions or opinions as possible. While what you learn might be upsetting or disappointing, there's also just as good of a chance you'll learn things that make you feel better. Knowledge is power, and it makes for strong citizens.

Whatever you can do to support your country now is wonderful. Be proud and stand tall.
