Mentally mindful for children ages 2+

Children’s mental health matters

By Erika Busson Published 2 years ago 4 min read

Children’s mental health also matters whether they are 2 years old up to being an adult. Working in the childcare industry a lot of settings don’t bring mental health into their curriculum. I think that it’s extremely silly that children the age of 2 don’t learn about how their mind works and how many emotions they really have. For me it’s really Important that the children who are in my care learn about their feelings everyday. We have circle time where all the children sit down and learn about the weather, the days of the week, the months, how they are feeling but it’s never in depth of why they have these feelings and how to control them.

I make sure that the children in my care understand how many feelings they have and why we have them. It’s so important to communicate. Children from the age of 2 always know about their happy face, sad face, angry face etc but they don’t know why sometimes we feel these emotions. Depending on how their guardian’s communicating with them children really have no idea why we have all these feelings and worries. Every time we are in circle time I bring a book that has inspired me and has really helped me show children from as young as 2 to express their feelings. The book is called the colour monster, 7 different colour monsters that represent each feeling.

I’ve come up with an activity pack which is based around the 7 monsters that represents a feeling. These activity packs helps not only children but also guardians that really do struggle with communicating with their child in an in-depth way. Having these packs really help children understand the types of emotions and how to control them before it gets worse. Mental health is really happening from the ages of 2 when children transfer into nursery and school and how the anxiety cripples as they watch their parents worry. The childcare industry is really a hard but rewarding job at the same time. As nursery nurses and guardians we can really help each other teach children by communicating with them more and helping them understand their mind.

The packs that I have made are more for a personal at home situations where you can bring these activities when your child is playing up or just to help them have a routine everyday. It really is important to make sure your child has a routine just because they know everyday at this time it’s calm down time. I make these packs so there’s a variety of different activities that are fun and expressive. It’s so hard in a nursery environments as so many things are strict but we do make sure that all children have so much communication not just with ourselves but with other children, being social and being aware that other children have feelings too.

We’ve brought out a collection of monster that represent 7 colours of feelings and we have done activities that will help children not only understand the feeling but also to problem solve on how to help that monster over come their feelings together. This pack will be a limited edition which will only be on pre-order due to us making each monster with our hands I have teamed up with my mum who also works as a manager in a playgroup and she will be making activities for nursery’s that bring mental health into their curriculum and to help bring mental health for children age 2 above into their settings. These packs not only help children’s mental health it also helps with kindness, sharing, behaviour and also helps guardians communicate with their children with starter conversation cards and prompt cards for themselves. Although guardians find it so hard to find ways of helping their children every single one of you are doing an amazing job and asking for help isn’t an embarrassing thing. We are on your side and working in the industry already I know how hard children can be. But we are all here and I really want to make more of a difference and start to bring mental health with toddlers into a curriculum in place for nursery’s. Mindful monster curriculum will be in place and I will keep fighting to bring it into nursery’s and pre- school. Our website and shop will be launched very soon but for the 7 Mindful Ways puppets and activity pack please message me on Facebook to pre-order please know all pre orders must be paid in full and depending on how many pre orders we have we will then confirm a date where we will ask for you address and send you the pack. These packs can be digital without the puppets and then posted with puppets.

We hope you will fall in love with these products as much as I do as I’m so passionate about mental health for 2+ year olds.
