Alcohol Addiction: Mental Disease or Choice?
As I reach for my third water bottle within the hour to cure my killer hangover, I think back to the vague events of the night before. I scroll through my camera roll at the numerous pictures taken to help my memory. Cheeks pressing together with big smiles pass by, live photos capture stumbling dancers. The next photo is one of me by myself, and from the first glance at my eyes, low and red, I get an intrusive thought, one that has haunted me for years: Am I becoming my father’s daughter? After a decade of watching his internal battle with alcohol addiction, I have suppressed numerous lingering questions that have perplexed my subconscious. The one that stumps me the most, may be the most significant one to find an answer to: Is alcohol addiction a choice or a disease?

Just One More Round
I was never a big drinker before college. My parents occasionally let me try their beer or a shot if we were at one of their friend's houses, but I never got drunk. I wasn't friends with the party crowd in high school, and my friends and I were much happier going to IHOP or playing board games than trying to get wasted.

What Your Favorite Drink Says About You
Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, most bartenders tend to get a good grasp of people based on what they order at a bar. Though there's always exceptions to the rule, there's a little bit of truth to the belief that your favorite drink may say something about you.

Coming Out...As An Alcoholic
Over the years, I had given a lot of thought to quitting drinking. The first thing that troubled me about it was the word “alcoholic,” and, worse, having to admit that I was one. I had a problem with its connotation. In my mind, alcoholics were the people that drank the mouthwash under their sink for a buzz. That wasn’t me. Plus, as long as I didn’t drive after drinking, to me that counted as drinking responsibly.

Most Expensive Drinks in the World
Drinking is an act of decadence - whether it's straight or in cocktail form. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that both restaurants and brewmakers have an unspoken competition for the title of having the most expensive drinks in the world.

Michter's Straight Rye
There is nothing better than cracking the bottle on a new rye whiskey, except possibly for when I crack the bottle on this old favorite. Michter’s Spirits hit it out of the park with both their Straight Rye and Small Batch Bourbons. No surprise coming from a company with a winery background, but boy did they learn the whiskey business fast! You see, I’m a snob about my whiskey. If it isn’t made in Bourbon, Kentucky you’d better damn well not call it bourbon around me, and if it has cinnamon, or any other flavoring, I will pour it out and scatter spelt and salt.

Look, We Might Need a Cocktail Every Day this Month
It’s a big year, 2017. And no month of 2017 is bigger than May. See, back in May 1917 – that’s 100 years ago for those of us with Arts degrees – one Clara D.D. Walsh of St Louis, Missouri (formerly Miss Clara D.D. Bell of Lexington before her fortuitous – fortuitous for us all – marriage to one Julius S. Walsh Jnr) hosted the world’s first cocktail party.

Recognizing Rosé
Whether you call it ‘Rosato,’ ‘Rosewein,’ ‘Rosado’ or even ‘Blush,’ wine drinkers the world over have been enjoying ‘Rosé’ wines in increasingly larger numbers. Pink wine has been with us since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, but the past several years have seen a worldwide increase in rosé consumption. While consumers have embraced Rosé, the often rarified world of the Wine Competition has not been quite so keen to reflect the trend. ‘Rosé wine’ may be a category at many competitions but divergent styles are often lumped together, pitting bone dry wines against sweeter examples. Hardly a level playing field.

Things You Didn't Know About Vodka
With a history potentially dating back to the 8th century, there are probably quite a few interesting things you didn't know about vodka. Vodka and some of its most famous producers like Absolut, Smirnoff, Grey Goose, bring back fond memories, or sometimes lack thereof, for many of us.
