Your Turn

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 20 days ago 1 min read
Jean-Leon Gerome - "Whirling Dervishes" (1895)

The subtle glory of a turn taken

Must be recognized and celebrated;

The smallest spin can make cells awaken

Minute machines, thus recalibrated

Watch the mute majesty of sunflowers

As they find their bright lord with dark faces

Ostensibly immobile followers

Shrug off rumored stasis for light's graces

Whole galaxies do their dervish dances

If the ecstatic energy of life

In one shape, on existence advances

It is a circle, forged from peace and strife

From quarks to quazars, each must take its turn

The dancer whirls and from him, we must learn

Ekphrastic
