Wishing We were at the Beach
Dipping my toes into longing and fear of summer.
Too brief summer casts her long shadow on
golden fields of sunflowers, corn and sheep.
Waking to sweated heat, pink-clouded dawn.
I turn to your flushed cheeks and let you sleep.
Perhaps today we bike to the river.
To drown our toes, reach for reflexive frogs.
Toweled, shivering, exposed and slimmer,
stepping over rocks, balancing on logs.
We each choose ice cream: chocolate and mint,
sugar streams, dripping down gold waffle cones.
Parents pack up, children stay, adamant,
sand castles melt, the folding lawn chair groans.
Imagine your last day of high school here,
barbecue, pop songs, your first taste of beer.
