Visibly Invisible

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a month ago Updated about a month ago 1 min read
Caravaggio, "Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy," 1606

Some contemporary minds seem so smug

Dismissing the soul as a quaint, old myth

Sweeping sublime strangeness under the rug

Studying swords and ignoring the smith

Contemplate this ecstasy ravished whore

Friend and confidante of a mortal god

Spat upon; impossible to ignore

Where is the locus of her feelings, odd?

In her frontal lobe, perhaps, or her knee?

In the left ventricle of her raw heart?

Perhaps this painting is both lock and key

Its audible silence shows it is art

The part of you that feels real ecstasy

Is visibly impossible to see

Ekphrastic

Deep thinking happening here. Love that. Great sonnet!

I see you are a big fan of Caravaggio, the player of lights? What is she feeling? Agony, longing? despair? It's impossible to see into the painter's mind, beliefs, interpretation of Scripture. I think we look into our own as we try to make sense of his.

"Is visibly impossible to see" I raised my eyebrows in fascination! I love the way you develop this thought-process at the end of your poem! 💌

Deep and thought-provoking. It all comes down to knowing yourself.
