The Stray Dog

and the city lights

The Stray Dog

Where the neon lights blind,

A skinny dog wanders, its outlines blurred.

Passers-by with their eyes glued to their screens,

hearts in a digital cloud,

They label him a stray

No tag hanging from his neck, no ID to claim,

No one to miss him, no one to blame.

An apparition in the concrete shadow,

His silent plea lost on the city sidewalk.

Yet, when night falls, hides from urban noise,

In a forgotten corner, where it should be.

There, his world is naked,

A bond with a man poorer than many can bear.

Their shared dreams,

The dog stands guard,

His bark is a warning, his loyalty real.

But the city doesn't see, doesn't stop to discover,

The homeless old man, the silent dog lover.

Thank you for giving them a voice, Ema. Society tends to forget those who need help.

  • Gosh this was so sad and emotional. People who rarely notice the ones in need. Loved your poem!
