A Life

Like Tiresias.

She has seen it all before-

too many times to mention.

She has stood, momentous and proud.

Victorious even.

Protecting her master’s home as if it were her own.

She stopped the thieves who came to prey.

Hid him from soldiers baying for blood.

She had watched the lovers leave,

Arm in arm.

And saw him depart alone.

Exhaling a sigh of relief,

that he was safe from harm.

And in the end-

outlived him.

She had seen the grandsons come in,

And out,

Later, she had watched the new door arrive

Unceremoniously.

In all its polyvinyl chloride glory.

A vision.

In white.
