The Cracked Teacup

Author Avengers, January 2024

By Kelsey ClareyPublished 5 months ago β€’ 1 min read

It's time for the first Author Avengers piece of the year!

This month's prompt was selected by Author Avengers founder, Lou Yardley: A broken teacup, carefully mended with gold, becomes a symbol of resilience and hope.

Due to some time and energy constraints this month, I opted for some free verse poetry over a prose piece.

Of all the teacups on the shelf,

the most imperfect is my favourite.

Lilac china - streaked with gold -

riches filling every crack and chip.

Made stronger and more valuable than the rest

by all it has been through.

Yes, I love this idea. The gold fills the cracks but also highlights the resilience to keep going and stay together. Such a great metaphor. And a beautiful imperfectly perfect teacup.
