The acceptance of joy
Has opened a portal of beauty
To be explored by the lover of living.
Run down to the ocean of your heart’s desire
And dive deep into the sea of your soul
Until the brilliant wave of your being
Has merged with the water of existence.
I surrender to this song
That calls me to be dancing
Awake all night and day with the light
Sparkling across the spray of surf like a prayer
Asking for my reverence to the divinity in this moment.
Our time has come to return to a rhythm of balance and harmony
With ourselves and each other and the nature that holds us
So tenderly and patiently awaiting our awakening
As we move closer to the original music
We remember the melody
We were born to sing.

As his father, afflicted by Alzheimer’s, fades away, the narrator is haunted by a dream that may be a memory, returning to him insistently. The piece is full of wonderful detail (the father touching his lip where once there was a mustache, “but now he is clean-shaven—he has been for years” — and moving in revealing the complexities of a family’s life. A worthy winner which shows the power of dreams to influence us.
