Rot

a poem

I know the way things rot.

Brown and white slime on sugar snap peas,

black fuzz on applesauce uncovered and abandoned,

the expanding plastic of a milk jug kept in the fridge weeks past the best by date,

Diet Coke grows mold, floating like lilypads at the top of a fast food cup.

After a while, you learn not to open leftover containers.

The reusable must be disposable when it sits too long, as it often does.

I promised myself I would do better this time.

I was doing better this time,

but the rot always catches up.

All things must decay eventually.

All things do rot and it seems natural to fear this, but in Nature, everything goes that route and we're all still here. 😊

Well written! A great metaphor that leaves us wondering about what kind of fruits we've left to rot. Congrats on your top story! Well done.

  • This is oddly beautiful while being at the same time incredibly sad. You capture the feeling of depression really well. Congrats on the Top Story!

Been there! Sending love to you. It’s a cycle for sure, but the periods of cleanliness feel so much sweeter for it.

my husband always says, "Keep the leftovers. I'll eat them for lunch." he never does. another item for the garbage can.

I feel that cycle. The line 'I was doing better' hit hard. Wonderful imagery in this difficult piece. Congrats on TS :)
