Resin musings

They found you tucked away in a spot of amber

marveling at your fragile frame.

You stopped for a snack or a rest perhaps

and became a meal for the taking.

All those rows of razor teeth helpless

against the might of viscous ooze.

And so we study you now, trapped in time

and I wonder as I trace the sticky sap

on the towering pines near my home,

what will be the lure for me?

Will I realize too late?

The golden glow from your fossilized grave

draws my mind's eye once more,

and I think I see the answer.

We're already ensnared, our plight is fixed.

From birth, we begin with a droplet clinging gently,

yet as we grow, we ignore the resin as it takes hold.

We're stuck to the daily grind,

a cycle that's never stopped throughout history

for creature or man.

It pushes on, one sunrise after the next,

tumbling us along with amber-laced intent.

Some become petrified long before their last breath,

others dress themselves in present tense.

One thing remains constant, steadfast–

the path of survival is one we all travel.

In the end, the question is not what will be our downfall,

it's what will our legacy be?

Shall we be preserved or entombed...

Perhaps Oculudentavis, you had it right,

living life, no yesterdays or tomorrows in sight.

I’ve not heard of this one either! Intelligent and unique work. I really liked these lines especially! “Some become petrified long before their last breath, others dress themselves in present tense. One thing remains constant, steadfast– the path of survival is one we all travel”. ☺️

  • Oh this is so cool!! I have loved learning about all these dinosaurs. I had no idea there was one so small. Plus, as always, you bring up such excellent questions in your writing.

This is brilliant. I'd never heard of this little, but I love how you turned its existence into such a thought-provoking piece. This right here says it all, "In the end, the question is not what will be our downfall, it's what will our legacy be? Shall we be preserved or entombed..."

Wonderful poem Heather, very thought provoking as Dana said. The line, “Shall we be preserved or entombed”, really spoke to me

Wondefully thought-provoking! Thank you for the link! I had no idea about this little one. I have a small piece of amber I found among some river rocks that has what appears to be a tooth of some sort embedded in it. I'm planning to try to gently polish the scratches out of the surface so the specimen is more visible. Maybe it'll bring fame and fortune one day. lol
