recovery is a hill

For Real Poetic’s Anniversary Unofficial Challenge!

Transformation/Recovery by Joseph J Stevens

anguish comes first in waves

nausea rising in my sour throat

never forgotten, especially not

in the here and now; wounds open up again, seeming so

visible and stark against my broken skin, and the fear is palpable

eating away at my fragile heart

reel it in and breathe deep; now i stand proud and tall

sending the memories away with a mighty command

allowing them to wash over me like water

recovery is a steep, never ending hill, and yet

yearning for a future again is where i have found myself

Yes. That image "eating away at my fragile heart" says so much. Uplifting end though. Good stuff.
