Pretend By Day

"Those thoughts will kill you."

By Jaz LeighPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

Here I stand,

Upon this cliff

With raging nerves

And body stiff.

Down below,

The angry waves

Await the girl

That no one saved.

The voices scream

Inside my head.

They tell me I'd

Be better dead.

I've survived this long;

God knows know.

My eyes draw closed.

It's raining now.

The clouds cry with me.

They know I'm sad.

It's as if the sky

Knows things are bad.

Something gentle

Caught my hand

And to my side

There stood a man.

"You feel it too?"

His voice was soft.

My laugh was bitter:

"How can I not."

He breathed a sigh.

His smile was slight

As we looked out

Into the night.

And as the rain

Still hammered down,

I wondered how

It felt to drown,

"Those thoughts will kill you."

Came his voice.

"It's not as though

I have a choice.

In this life

I have no say.

Cry by night,

Pretend by day."
