Oh glorious contraption on the countertop

My howl sings your praises

For you open unto me

Containers of incredible comestibles

I be a connoisseur

Of your chunked chicken

In creamy gravy

And tender turkey casserole

With sweet carrot mash

Luscious on my palette

I hear the clank

As you connect to the top of the can

And the crank

As you cut your way around

Oh how mighty your jaws

To chew through metal

What culinary creations

Do you have in store for me?

I leap from my place of comfort

Curled on the couch

My claws clattering on the floor

As I trot into the kitchen

To await my second evening chow

Perhaps my owner will be a nincompoop

And forget that he fed me

Just one hour before

My mouth waters and my jowls froth

Drool drops from my chops

I sit down like a good boy

Captivated by what delicacies await me

Only to see my owner turn

Hand clenched around a can of corn

Oh glorious contraption on the countertop

My howl cries out your betrayal

Such an original and striking ode to doggy-life! great work, and congratulations on Top Story! I so love the line "Containers of incredible comestibles" I could almost open a can and try it! but I have to remember, I'm not a dog...

  • Perfectly captures the waiting of a canine for a meal (or the hopes of one). Congratulations on Top Story!

I love this! Great choice of taking the dog’s perspective! The word “nincompoop” is so underused! It’s one of my favorites! 💖👏

I love this poem! The alliteration flows naturally. Fun read and so true too.
