Walked a mile in Mama's shoes today,
took more than stockings and style,
For every stone kicked out of my way,
Said, "It will only be a little while."

Just like Mama I experienced the wind,
No breeze could make me cold,
Asked God for patience and His help please send,
To no extent were days like this ever told.

Held my head like Mama did,
Parallel to the clouds in the sky,
Tears, prisoners behind my eyes, barred by my lids,
I would either do, or I'd die.

I walked with Mama every step,
Every step was she and I,
Her poise, her words came from my depths--
It was Mama's presence that I drew nigh.
