Looking Afar

Unclear Destination

By Dan R FowlerPublished 2 months ago 1 min read

Looking Afar

Away off in the distance, I can see it if I squint,

Possible futures shimmering, but it’s only a hint.

I’ve tried to peer into the mists and vapors ahead,

With man’s curiosity perhaps even a little dread.

It’s not a place that many can venture freely,

Those who would proclaim to grasp it fearlessly.

For it is the uncharted course that is in question,

That unknown destination fills us with apprehension.

Many have shouted to the rooftops in assurity,

That it’s with confidence they travel there with sincerity.

And, yet, throughout their lives pretending to be alive,

Displaying little faith or love, others compassion-deprived.

Frolicking along living their dutiful imitation of life,

There was little thought of what was wrong or right.

Molded with those who cared little or nothing for truth,

Each masked in old age now trying to cling to their youth.

Let’s resolve this mystery ‘oft has been said,

By many who walk this way, the living and the dead.

For life is not just a simple passage as we’ve been told,

By those who hold nothing sacred, this gift of pure gold.

Let us march towards this undetermined destination and time,

When the body we possess turns on us and becomes unkind.

And in those moments when we perchance look back,

May we find a record of a selfless life we’ve lived as a fact.

That ending made me smile. I hope it would be that way if we look back. Loved your poem!
