I Should Have Seen the Signs Coming

Too Late

By Rowan Finley Published 5 years ago 1 min read

It was your birthday and I wanted to surprise you,

even though I thought I was doing everything right it all fell through.

You had just gotten out of your evening college class,

and I remembered trying to walk there fast.

I started by giving you red roses because they were your favorite,

our night and truly wanted us to savor it.

I bought you a new dress for you to wear,

you looked so beautiful when you tried it on, I couldn't help but stare.

Together we drove out to eat for a nice dinner for two,

as we drove there, your words sure seemed few.

I was so in love with you, completely head over heels,

you made my mind spin like a thousand wild wheels.

Sitting down to a romantic dinner, you were still subdued,

my eyes, on you, were intently glued.

While I was praying for our dinner I slipped you another gift,

opening your eyes, and opening it, there still seemed to be a rift.

It was a necklace that I carefully latched around your neck,

little did I know that not many months after this I would soon be a wreck.

We ate our food and I remembered the chocolate that I got you,

for in my pocket it had melted a little bit, this I soon figured and knew.

I was so in love with you, but looking back, I know now,

that you felt uncomfortable and were getting ready to leave anyhow.

You knew then that I was not the one you wanted,

and now, this memory keeps me a little bit forever haunted.
