Have You Ever…

Waited For What Feels Like Forever?

Have you ever met somebody that you instantly clicked with?

Everything felt like it had suddenly fallen into place.

You meet, and you began to fall,

Yet the timing isn’t right for either of you.

Not at all.

.

Your heart hopes, and you try,

Yet your would-be love?

Well, it slowly drifts out of reach.

The distance inhibits your future

Although the feelings never really disappear.

.

Life goes on, and you wish him happiness,

Even as you see him getting swept up in craziness.

You try your best to be a supportive friend,

Loving him from afar and hoping his pain will soon end.

.

All the while, he still holds a piece of your heart,

But you are forced to go on pretending.

Denying what you feel,

Denying that the feelings that have lingered in your heart are all too real

Because then you both needed time for mending.

So, the days went by, and still, you kept pretending.

.

And that heart of yours?

Oh, she still hopes…

That somehow, some way, even if on some far-off day

You’ll see each other again,

That this wasn’t all in your head.

.

You hope there will be no more denial,

No more pretending.

He’ll lay his heart bare,

And he’ll tell you the words you’ve longed to hear.

.

For now? You don’t know when

Or even if that day will ever come.

So, you hold it all inside

And you wait.

.

The ball is in his court.

Will he pivot or advance?

It seems like you’ve waited forever;

Will the two of you ever get your chance?

.

They say the best things in life are worth waiting for

So you comfort yourself with the knowledge

That if it’s meant to be

He’ll come walking through that door.

He’ll tell you he’s ready,

And that he wants so much more.

.

If not, your life is still better for having him in it

And that will have to be enough.

Although, admittedly, this waiting game has been pretty tough

Because your heart is still hoping

That someday, it will be your turn.

That the flame lit all those years ago will finally be free to burn.

.

Until then, you wonder what he’d say

If you were to lay it all bare.

If you were to ask him, ‘Have you ever

Wondered what could’ve been?

Do you think we should give this a chance

Or file it under never?

I think after all this time, it shows that there isn’t anything we can’t weather.’

.

‘When our story is added to the Book of Life,

What will the unwritten chapters hold in store?

A lifetime of friendship or a love that could last forevermore?’

. . .
