It's been very warm plus stressful
When I feel these conflicted obstacles I don't feel very creative
Like my ability to craft stories vanishes from sight
Poor me
None the less I still seem to be able to write poems
Free verse poems at least
So here we go
I'm the type of person who always second guesses themselves
Like this morning I've been retaking the DMV test
I only have a learners permit
And it's going to be inactive soon
I plan to get a new one
And eventually get a legit license
So I'm re-taking the test quizzes online just in case
Whenever I take a test I always go back and forth on my answers
Sometimes I know I've answered wrong
Yet I will still click the wrong answer out of fear
This is something I strive to get better at
And improve
They say follow your heart
Yet isn't it best to trust your gut
Our guts are pretty important
For our stomach
And ultimately survival
Fear can be a very overwhelming emotion
Based on pressure
Pressure builds and builds
Like the hot lava inside of a volcano
If not controlled it will explode and pop like a balloon
Pressure can be difficult to face
Yet the more you overcome pressure
The stronger we become
I hope this made sense

Free verse is my jam
You can just go off and say whatever
Even if whatever doesn't make complete sense
That's the true definition of art in my book
Letting go of pressure and just creating something fresh and unique
is powerful and truly inspiring
I'll let you the viewer decide my fate on this one

The piece is full of wonderful detail (the father touching his lip where once there was a mustache, “but now he is clean-shaven—he has been for years” — and moving in revealing the complexities of a family’s life. A worthy winner which shows the power of dreams to influence us.

I so relate to this, Matt. I've been feeling very stuck lately, and poetry is something I can always fall back on to keep my writing muscles flexed. Nice work!
