Dancing with Life
Days in the breeze, bare feet running along streams
Indigo blue midnights, bon fires under the stars
Sleepy mornings, hands wrapping around, warm cups of coffee
Tuesdays eating tacos, sharing laughs with close friends
Relaxing in the orange glow of sunsets, cocktail escapes on back decks
Afternoons backpacking through tall grass, waking up in the middle of forests
Campfire story evenings, marshmallows roasting over crackling flames
Trips on winding roads, beach vacations, rafting down rivers
Islands in the Caribbean, discovering new cultures, making memories in photographs
Oceans flowing in waves, surf boards sticking upright in the sand
Nights dancing with distractions, kisses, you would die for

Dance with the distractions of life. Find ways to escape, to get away from the every day world. Take time out to be a free spirit. Keep the ones you love close. Remember what's really important, forget what isn't. Find peace. Set drama aside. Breathe in, breathe out. Take a pause. Take in the beauty that’s all around you. Feel the healing power of just being for a while. Love the moments that take you by surprise. Let your feet carry you down a beach, go into the spaces between trees. Push the accelerator down in your car, feel the wind in your hair. Turn the music up, sing out loud. Create a bucket list, start checking things off.
Life is full of responsibilities. Take care of them, but don’t let them define you.

As his father, afflicted by Alzheimer’s, fades away, the narrator is haunted by a dream that may be a memory, returning to him insistently. The piece is full of wonderful detail (the father touching his lip where once there was a mustache, “but now he is clean-shaven—he has been for years” — and moving in revealing the complexities of a family’s life. A worthy winner which shows the power of dreams to influence us.

Oh this is gorgeous writing! And exactly the kind of distractions I can get behind. I find “distraction” such a negative word, implying that one is evading responsibility or running from problems. Your poem has made me wonder if sometimes what I consider a problem worth focusing on is not really a distraction from me enjoying life.
