Corduroy Joy

A Poem

Corduroy Joy didn’t know she was a toy

She thought she was like every other girl or boy

She laughed and played all day

And at night she laid in her bed

Not knowing there was nothing but cotton in her head

She had many friends

But no one knew what went on inside her head

She knew she was different

But she didn’t know how

She didn’t feel that different

It’s not like I’m a dog or a cow

She told herself

But somehow, someway

She knew she didn’t quite fit in

But then one day

A new boy came to play

He looked kind of like Joy

But in a slightly different way

He wasn’t made of corduroy

But he was stuffed just like her

She knew

Because she could see his cotton leaking from his head

Hey, hey, are you okay?

She asked

Why, yes?

Why do you ask? He said

Because I can see the fuzzy stuff coming from your head, Joy said

Oh, that

I’m sorry. Sometimes my thoughts leak out

Joy paused and pondered

Wondered some more

Your thoughts leak from your head?

She asked

Why, yes?

It happens sometimes when I’ve been played with too rough

The kids aren’t always kind

That’s why you gotta be tough

You see here? You got some too

It’s not as bad

But I can see it in you

We’re much the same, you and I

We’re two of a kind

We don’t fit in with them

Because we were never meant to

But we’re together now

So at least we have a friend like ourselves

At least we’re not lost on the shelves

The boy reached out

And pushed her cotton in

Sewed Joy up

See there, that’s what you get when you have a best friend

There’s no need to fit in

When you have someone like you

Someone that knows you from inside

And likes you for you
