An Ode To Salt

Ephemeral Value

An Ode To Salt

Born of Huangdi legend, shaping the world from big bangs of

Unstable combustible metal and deadly poisonous gas

Symbol of wealth, loyalty, friendship, and love

Keeper of covenants crystalized in elaborate cellars of glass.

***

Lot’s wife, turned pillar of salt, would soon face a double shame

Compared to a whole city, Taghaza, a work camp built of the same

But even this city of salt becomes eclipsed by the moon

Of majestical underground sites of salt chandeliers carved above a lagoon.

***

Worth your own salt in words and phrases myriad as the colors you display

Morphing shape for enhancing taste, pickling, curing, and preserving

Controlled by church and state, keeping evil spirits at bay

Monopolized and democratized, of mighty praise you are deserving.

I applaud your rhyme schemes! Fun choice to see it change in the middle, but overall the rhythm the rhymes bring add a lot to this piece, and make me want to go back and read it over and over again. So well-crafted. I'm always so filled with admiration for your work, Stephanie! You bring a precision to everything you write, and such interesting history and facts too. So glad this got Top Story!

You have shown us here, how many ways that salt has been used over time. But I think my favourite is this right here, as you have used it to make ART!! Excellent work, congrats on the Top Story.

  • Wow! I read this just expecting salt as I know it to be used but you touched on so many uses and a whole history and an entire story of salt! That was awesome and so unexpected! And as always you did an excellent job writing this with such colorful language.
