A Poet or a Journalist

If your work is never read are you really a writer...

By Brandon PhillipsPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

I want to be an author, I want to be a writer, I want to be published, and I want to be known. I want to see my work on bookshelves and see how far I've really grown. Not just my book shelf of course. I see this everyday, I want to scream until I'm hoarse.

One day I’ll be a writer. One day, I know it’s true. For now I only journal, I journal to me and to you. I know you are no one, I’m ok that I am the only reader. I must still call this a journal, I am not yet a leader. Leaders have followers, those to take in their message. Writers have readers, those to take in their lessons.

If a lone tree falling in the woods makes no sound, then a poet with no audience is a crazy man, for his safety, must be imprisoned and bound. The poet with no audience is just talking to himself. Yes I know one, he is me, he is myself. Truly though, has having zero readers ever changed how I felt? For writing, the answer is no.

I am happy and content with the struggle alone. The struggle to write and create and stay off my phone. In this struggle I see my growth, this I know is true. This is a struggle that exists with or without you. I know I said "you" again and I know you are me. I wasn’t trying to make a point, I promise I'm not that deep. “You” is just easy to rhyme with, don’t blame me, I know it's cheap.

I see it now, I get it. I don’t need an audience to stand tall. An audience is only great until they cheer to see you fall. I am a poet. I am a writer. I am happy my work is on my wall.
