A Piece of History
By:C.Mountain
In early years, she caused a scream.
But, Lula’s story was more beautiful
than any appearance ever seen.
I wish I hadn’t been so mean.
Lula was made in the 50s as a Christmas present.
Back then, society wasn’t so pleasant.
There were only white dolls available for purchase.
White was the sole definition of gorgeous.
Then a lucky girl was gifted Lula to love.
A doll that helped her feel good about being black.
In a world where her skin color was under attack.
Lula was sewed with special care— even with a little prayer.
How incredibly rare.
Although that little girl is fully grown,
Lula is held sacred inside of her heart—
Even as she begins to fall apart.
Grandma still loves her.

Ps: This is dedicated to my grandmother, Carrie.

This. Representation matters and always has. What a beautiful ode to this doll!
