Have you ever felt like not being able to move forward? You kind of felt a bit uneasy, you couldn’t really put your finger on it, but it was there, like something is stopping you. It sure happened to me, many times. It is the mess. The mess in the head, the mess in the ward robe, the mess in the house.

It might not look devastatingly messy, but that is not the point when you cannot find anything.

It is a horrible feeling not finding something you urgently need. You get panicky, throw everything on the floor, smash doors and drawers shut, gesturing for attention, showing your frustration. And then, when you sincerely thought you have lost the item, you buy a replacement and then next thing you do, is finding the lost item.

It is laughing at you. The universe is taking the ‘piss’ out of you. But it has every right to. It is your own fault.

I am living like this on a day-to-day basis. I am always looking for something. I am always blaming my partner for misplacing things, well guess what…It is me who is misplacing it.

My wardrobe is about to explode, and so is my brain. A change is way overdue. Let us do a good deed and donate to charity. The clothes, not the thoughts.

Did you know the way things are organized in your home, that is how you feel and think? I notice when I have a period of being extremely tidy, so are my thoughts. Everything has its home.

I will start doing two things in 2021 and continue doing for the rest of my life.

1. Keep a daily journal.

2. Declutter the house.

1. Keep a daily journal.

Isn’t that what a writer should be doing anyway? Isn’t that an unspoken rule? Well, if it is, does that mean I am not a writer? I am positive that is not the case, but I am genuine about it when I say, it will help organising the mess inside my head. The thoughts, which do not have a home yet.

Here are 5 reasons to keep a journal.

1. Increase your self-worth and gratitude by writing down each morning what you are grate full for.

2. Keep a daily log to record your thoughts. Write down what happened, to who you spoke, what you ate, where you were, what you were thinking. You can express yourself in pictures, drawings, scribbling.

3. Write down your goals each day, this will keep you motivated.

4. Relieve stress by writing down what had happened just now or through out the day. Reflect on it and analyse your thoughts.

5. Find happiness in writing down the best thing that has happened to you today. You will find a smile on your lips.

2. Declutter the house (and keep it that way!)

Now this is more about establishing priorities than throw out everything. Check first if it has any meaning to you before banning it. Possessions, ideas, activities, people which don’t bring value only stress to your live, it is time to say goodbye to them.

Can you believe since the day I was born I kept collecting birthday and Christmas cards? They were just kept in the bottom of the drawer or wardrobe. Not even in a tidy pile but taking away a lot of space. My partner asked me “What are you keeping them for?” I said “Well for memories…”. Guess what? Memories don’t come from Christmas cards 10 years ago. Yes I miss my parents, but a Christmas card they have sent me last year will not bring them to me. So I chucked them away.

I will start with my wardrobe today and give my clothes and possessions back a home. It is time to free yourself.

Here are 10 reasons to declutter your home.

1. It could make you lose weight. When we declutter, we feel more in control of our lives which makes us be more disciplined and reduces stress levels.

2. Your stress levels with reduce and you will become happier even calmer in a tidier home.

3. You will stop thinking you are a naturally messy person.

4. It is liberating. To let go of things shows self-acceptance which is great for our mental well-being.

5. It is only the beginning. It will be the first of many changes.

6. You will have more energy to focus on joyful things, rather than wasting your energy on the small things.

7. You will enjoy being home more.

8. You will save some money. If you intend to work towards minimalism, you will throw the useless stuff out and only keep things with value, which saves you from spending a lot of money.

9. It will be easier to find things. You can now just blindly reach for the item, rather wasting your time looking for it.

10. You can donate your clothes to charity and will be doing a good deed indeed.

You see, both - your thoughts and your home - are connected, they can help each other by being kept tidy and you are finally at peace.
