Scientists conducted a seven-year study and found that dinner time can affect heart health and increase the risk of stroke.

Scientists from the Sorbonne University Paris Nord, France conducted a study that evaluated the health of 103,389 people over a period of seven years and found that eating before 8 p.m. is better for health. The researchers looked at food diaries kept by study participants from 2009 to 2022, tracking their meal times on all days of the week.

According to a report published by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research on December 14, researchers found that about one-third of study participants ate dinner before 8 p.m., while another third ate dinner at 9 p.m. During the study, there were about 2,000 cases of cardiovascular disease.

When researchers looked at dinner times for people with cardiovascular disease, they found that those who ate dinner the latest, after 9 p.m., had a 28 percent higher risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack than those who ate dinner before 8 p.m.

Stroke is a condition in which the blood vessels in the brain are interrupted, narrowed or blocked, causing anemia in the parenchyma that the cerebral blood vessels control. When there is anemia, the brain parenchyma will lack oxygen and nutrition, leading to necrosis. Stroke is divided into two types: hemorrhagic stroke caused by ruptured blood vessels in the brain leading to brain bleeding and ischemic stroke caused by narrowed blood vessels in the brain leading to anemia.

Transient ischemic attack is a temporary blockage of blood vessels to the brain that causes symptoms similar to a stroke but does not cause acute infarction or permanent damage.

“People often advise each other not to eat dinner too late, and this study shows that there is some truth to that advice,” said lead author Dr Bernard Srour of the Sorbonne Paris Nord University in France.

Nowadays, as society develops, people become busier and always feel that they never have enough time to complete everything. Busy lives also cause many people to form the habit of eating late at night, after they are done being busy. However, the habit of eating late at night and having dinner late at night can increase the risk of health problems.

Additionally, animal studies have shown that blood sugar and blood pressure often increase when animals eat dinner late. Eating dinner later, when blood pressure is lower, can also damage blood vessels over time and increase the risk of blood clots that can lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Other previous studies have also shown that people who eat dinner after 9 p.m. have a higher risk of cerebrovascular problems, including stroke and transient ischemic attacks, than those who eat before 8 p.m.

According to another study published in the journal Nature Communications, for every hour after dinner, the rate of stroke or transient ischemic attack in study participants increased by 8%.

Thus, studies encourage people to eat dinner earlier because this is a healthy habit . At the same time, eating dinner earlier also helps people reduce the risk of stroke or transient ischemic attacks.
