My Passion For Writing

My passion for writing runs deep within me. As a young kid I wanted to know how to write, I knew this was my passion. It’s hard to explain to everyone. Have you ever wanted to do something outside your comfort zone? This was me! I wrote my first short story at fourteen. It was a romance story called “Kingdom of Heaven” way before the movie even came out. So, I wrote this story with the same title in a completely different story when I was fifteen years old.

Why Did I Have So Many Doubts?

As an author we are artists and paper is our canvas. I would write about my protagonist having so much bravery, and passion. Most importantly love, as a teenager I never had the first love, or high school romance. I think all of the popular kids did, but not me. I was the nerdy teen girl who was always on the side lines. Invisible, and forgotten. The outcast. So, how can you write about someone that you’re not? Good question: well we all have an imagination, and sometimes love finds us when we least expect it to. My love as a kid was writing, and escaping into the pages of books from my favorite authors. But my doubts started when classmates would make fun of my lisp, and all I cared about was what others thought. The tears started, and I would escape into my writing on my computer in my bedroom. As I wrote while listening to mix CD’s, I burst into tears wondering if I would become somebody. Being young writers and authors, we all have doubts. It’s whether we overcome this, or not.

Why This Genre?

I write paranormal and contemporary romance; I prefer paranormal because I love to script this genre. I want my characters to have what I never had, power and strength. That’s why I always write in this genre.

Then I started writing contemporary romance because sometimes it’s a good way to spice things up. I always make my protagonist strong female leads.

This probably was the hardest thing for me to do. I didn’t feel like I had strength until recently.

They say write what you know and I’ve always had a fascination for the supernatural and for romance. Even as a teenager I was a hopeless romantic.

My First Writing Tool?

It was a typewriter. God, that makes me feel old saying this. I didn’t even know how to write then and I kept practicing like I had to prove a point. One day, I asked my grandma Mommow if she would teach me to write. She immediately jumped right into it; I would get upset if I didn’t catch on right away.

The Last Confrontation?

I had a huge confrontation with myself in the library a few years ago, I almost gave up writing altogether. I felt like nothing I wrote mattered to me. I was going through so much; I missed the man I love. Even dedicated a book to him. I wrote four on KDP and got discouraged and gave it up. Something was missing. I lacked passion, proper passion and descriptive ability. I can understand why an agent never wanted to sign with me. I had to learn so much, and I am still learning.

The Prize?

The prize is learning more about my career, and just writing for the fun of it again. I am doing what I love and that’s what matters to me. The bonus is the money. I want more in my slow success and I will have it. I know I will.

Doing What I Love?

I have done what I loved since I was sixteen. I didn’t know this but I paid too much attention to what people thought. Now, I could care less. I turn on my playlist and just start writing my words on my canvas.

A message to all authors young and old: It’s not about how fast you get there, it’s about doing what you love.
