Celebrating 1K Medium Followers But I’m Not Optimistic

My Medium account has finally reached the first 1K followers, but I’m scared the followers will grow.

Every creator strives for their audience to grow, this has been one of the best things that creators anywhere can have achieved. Because that way, that creator will have more chances to grow their work around the world. But I don’t feel comfortable now that I have finally reached the most coveted number of followers among Medium creators.

If you’ve just arrived on the platform, know that in here most creators celebrate their first 1K followers and their first $0.01 in revenue more than when he reaches the first $1K accumulated. On Medium the most pursued goals are the first 1K followers and the first monthly net of $1K.

I’ve been writing on Medium for two years now and I’ve never seen a writer celebrating 2K, 3K, 5K, 7K, 10K, or even 20K even 100K followers. Well, there are millions of creators in here, yet there are only 2500 outstanding writers from the big popular ones to the small popular ones. So maybe this story got lost on Medium, or maybe nobody wrote it.

Why don’t I feel comfortable with the first 1K followers?

1. Medium didn’t congratulate me

I’m almost at one thousand one hundred followers but so far I haven’t received that Medium notification congratulating the creator on achieving the first 1K followers. I remember when I hit the first 100 followers last year, I received a notification and saw several creators when they reached a thousand followers sharing their congratulations. For me it didn’t happen, the algorithm must have forgotten me. But that’s not a problem either.

2. Fake Followers

Lately, on Medium there has been an increase in the number of fake followers, and this brought me certain insecurity about followers, even though my stories could perform almost adequately for a 1K follower account. But this wave of fake followers makes me afraid of not having an authentic audience that could enjoy content made with love and passion and be lost mostly to the trash. I fear that I will be sending my content straight into the dumpster for years to come.

3. Audience Drop

Maybe you are thinking I am crazy, what do you mean by a drop in audience if you are increasing your followers?

Well, if I tell you that this image below is a printout of a performance of a Medium creator with over 80K followers would you believe me?

As you can see from the image, even with over 80K followers this creator is seeing his metrics dropping quite a bit, it seems unbelievable to think that he has views from over 80K people there. This is my fear, I have experience with YouTube and the same thing is happening to quite a few writers here on Medium. Most of the creators with large audiences are saying that their audience is dropping a lot, at least 4 of them have said so; so if this is happening to someone who has thousands of followers who could have millions of views, who am I with a thousand out of thousands!

It’s not that I’m not confident in my potential, that has nothing to do with potential because the creators who are performing poorly, are living newsroom legends. The problem is really in the algorithm, its direction today is directed elsewhere, and this is giving the giants problems because they are not being able to turn around on this narrow road where they are driving their careers.

But at least I am happy? But of course, I’m happy, it was a dream to see a thousand followers on an account that produces content written with love and dedication without even being an expert. I am very, very happy for a thousand followers reached, but I don’t feel sure that it is the guarantee of success from now on, I will still have to keep doing the same things I did to get here, if I depend only on the followers without boosting them, I will be nothing in this medium.

These are the reasons why I feel fearful. But I am very happy.
